Selections from TUCA Publication on the Global Economic Crisis (intro text)

The Global Union Research Network GURN) is pleased to be able to make available in English eight complete chapters of the recently published book Sindicatos 2009: Estrategias frente a la crisis mundial, el multilateralismo y los acuerdos comerciales y de inversion. Available in original Spanish for download in full text format courtesy of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA).

This collection is an outstanding collection of articles providing research, commentary, and analysis on the global economic crisis that exploded in the second half of 2008.  The work is divided into 63 chapters, considering not only the well-known effects of the current economic crisis, but also the many efforts across Latin America (and internationally) to respond to it strategically.  The list of authors includes Victor Baez Mosqueira (TUCA), Peter Bakvis (Global Unions Washington DC Office), Ebrahim Patel (SACTWU), Carlos Bustos (ICEM Colombia), Hilda Sanchez (TUCA) and many others.

The book is organized in sections focused on the national, regional and international levels, and concludes with a section focused on the latest set of pressures coming in the form of commercial/trade liberalization agreements (GATS, Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, etc.).

Eight of the 63 chapters were drafted in English, and are available here for free download.  They include the following:
