Remittances

Remittances (intro text)

Remittances, the money that migrant workers send home, play a very important role in the economy of many “origin” countries. In October 2007, a United Nations study estimated that migrants working in industrialized countries sent home more than US$300 billion to their families in 2006 – more than the US$104 billion provided by donor nations in foreign aid to developing countries. This is a conservative estimate; if informal channels are considered, the amount could be higher.
